Controlling the Speed of Synfire Chains

چکیده
This paper deals with the propagation velocity of synnre chain activation in locally connected networks of artiicial spiking neu-rons. Analytical expressions for the propagation speed are derived taking into account form and range of local connectivity, explicitly modelled synaptic potentials, transmission delays and axonal conduction velocities. Wave velocities particularly depend on the level of external input to the network indicating that synnre chain propagation in real networks should also be controllable by appropriate inputs. The results are numerically tested for a network consisting ofìntegrate-and-re' neurons.

Pattern Propagation Speed in Synfire Chains with Excitatory-Inhibitory Couplings
The speed of firing pattern propagation in a synfire chain, composed of non-leaky integrate-andfire neurons, and assuming homogenous connection delays, is studied. An explicit relation, relating the propagation speed to the connecting weights distribution and other network parameters, is derived. The analytic results are then checked with a computer simulation. When the network is fed with a fu...

Abstract: Precisely timed action potentials have been related to stimuli and behavior in monkeys, indicating that the neural coding may be based on precise spike timing of cortical neurons, synfire chains. An assumption that sensory information may be encoded by precise spike timing has been challenged by the critical question of whether synfire chains can successfully propagate through hierarc...
متن کاملRobust development of synfire chains from multiple plasticity mechanisms
Biological neural networks are shaped by a large number of plasticity mechanisms operating at different time scales. How these mechanisms work together to sculpt such networks into effective information processing circuits is still poorly understood. Here we study the spontaneous development of synfire chains in a self-organizing recurrent neural network (SORN) model that combines a number of d...
متن کاملSpikes, synchrony, sequences and Schistocerca’s sense of smell
This thesis starts from the assumption that individual neuronal action potentials (spikes) have computational and dynamical significance. Two of the types of activity that networks of spiking neurons can engage in are sequences and synchrony. The first part of the work reviews the role spikes, sequences and synchrony play in coding, dynamics and learning in the nervous system and models of the ...
متن کاملSynfire Chains and Catastrophic Interference
The brain must be capable of achieving extraordinarily precise sub-millisecond timing with imprecise neural hardware. We discuss how this might be possible using synfire chains (Abeles, 1991) and present a synfire chain learning algorithm for a sparsely-distributed network of spiking neurons (Sougné, 1999). Surprisingly, we show that this learning is not subject to catastrophic interference, a ...
